The Orange View (on hiatus) Because Apple is great but it isn't perfect

Make iTunes into a platform for competing apps

Apple iTunes is a big, fat mess and its been getting worse not better lately. Posterous CEO Sachin Agarwal has a great suggestion. Apple could publish the application program interfaces to let other folks write component programs.

Apple should turn iTunes into a platform: a robust set of APIs that can access my iTunes library, purchase history, and more. This would allow other developers to build really cool music related applications, without having to replace my iTunes library (or mess with the XML behind the scenes).
-Sachin's Posterous, April 14, 2011

I am a little more skeptical Apple would do this because it might allow iPhone and iPod competitors to hack into syncing with the iTunes library - good for customers but not good for Apple.
