Venture capitalists, especially those that invest in early-stage start-ups, have obviously taken note of the app developer explosion due to the popularity of Apple and Android smart phones.
Kleiner Perkins set up the first fund focused solely focused on iOS developers, though most are now also writing for Android. Today, VC firm DCM, which backed About.com, Sling media and Clearwire among many others, announced a $100 million fund aimed at Android developers.
“The rise of Android is a rare and massive opportunity – one that comes only once in a major tech cycle,” said David Chao, co-founder and general partner, DCM. "The A-Fund will seek out the most promising companies enhancing and extending the rich open Android ecosystem – in mobile and beyond – including applications, services, and enabling technologies.”
