The Orange View (on hiatus) Because Apple is great but it isn't perfect

Apple wanted LTE in the next iPhone but no

The latest rumor du jour on whether Apple's upcoming iPhone upgrade will include faster, fourth generation wireless Internet service arrives courtesy of Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek. Via Forbes blogger Eric Savitz, Misek says Apple wanted to include Verizon's LTE  technology but no:

As for LTE, he says the Qualcomm LTE chipset Apple would have used “is currently not achieving yields sufficient for inclusion in the iPhone 5.” He says Apple had hoped to have the LTE chipsets ready, but was planning a version without LTE called iPhone 4S.

  1. If I were at Apple and I knew that the only upgrade they had for this year was an iPhone 4S, I’d be petrified. Flagship competitors to an iPhone 4S (Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, …) have *already launched*.

That means the “Android Army” has plenty of time explore variations, attack niches and get a jump on the next generation of devices before the iPhone 4S even launches. If that’s the playing field for late 2011, that puts a lot of pressure on an “iPhone 6” launch in 2012.
