I found this site through Techmeme's tracking the discussion and I'm very impressed!

I loved the title for this post and the body didn't disappoint for having more bon mots and insight.

Your NYC comment was awesome, too. I like a lot of Gruber's posts and scoops but sometimes it's like he's stuck in a very silly loop.

I totally agree with your point about opinions about a best phone vs. the best phone for a person. I love Apple but have loathed iTunes from its inception and thought my video iPod was an expensive waste of money. So I've never been too tempted by the iPhone until the iPhone 4s.

The whole "some people don't get the iPhone" vein that Siegler is in discounts the experience of people who totally get Apple's designs but don't think every product line is equal. My choosing Android and Mac and GoogleTV instead of iPhone and Mac and AppleTV isn't because I selectively lost appreciation for Apple.

Siegler doesn't understand the difference between what he does and what Josh does. One writes troll-bating page view fodder for a technology rag while the other actually tries to provide a balanced a fair overview of the gadget world: you know, journalism.

Here's how you can tell the difference in one easy test. Do I ever have to read an article or post by Siegler or Gruber to know what they're going to say? What value do these two men provide besides comfort and ammunition to the fanatics?

Nielson's predictions of doom may be the wishful thinking of an idealist. In a "just world", the Fire (in its present form) would fail for all the reasons he mentions.

I imagine that, as someone who knows how much better things could be, Nielson's heart breaks whenever crappy interface is accepted as the norm.

We should know from history never to underestimate to capacity for people to adapt to and accept the sub-obtimal UI of high tech devices. It's as if we were trained to blame ourselves (rather the designers) when we have trouble learning and using technology.

Personally, I expect the Fire to get a substantial update reasonably soon, but Amazon's developer resources will have relatively little to do with it. Google addressed many of the complaints in the reviews with Ice Cream Sandwich, so I expect Amazon to upgrade their codebase fairly quickly (at least one tech journalist claims they are already working on it).
